About the School
SMA Negeri (SMAN) 1 Palembang is a public high school located in the city of Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia. Palembang 1 State Senior High School has gained recognition as a superior school and is the oldest Public High School in the city of Palembang. Similar to high school in general in Indonesia, the education period is taken in three years, starting from Class X to Class XII.
A brief History
Palembang State High School 1 was originally named B High School B which was established on May 10, 1950 with 6 teaching staff at the time, namely R.M. Akil, W.G. Lap, Mrs. Gentil, Hasan Delais, Brother Monfort and Nanguning. While the students came from Bengkulu High School which had been disbanded plus 22 students from 4th grade SMO whose quality was considered to be equivalent / equivalent to the 1st grade high school students. As the school leader at that time was Mr. S.A. Sitohang The Palembang 1 Public High School building was initially in the SMO building, then moved for a few months in the SGA building located on the Indrapura road, then in October 1951 moved again to the community school in the Pagaralam hallway until 1955. In March 1951 a change took place the leader of the SA hand Sitohang to the hands of B.M. Adnan who previously worked at the Central Junior Inspection from the Ministry of P.P. and K.
In the early years of the establishment of Palembang State B High School, this school faced many difficulties, partly because:
- Building problems are always on the move, so psychologically disadvantaged, high school students feel less appreciated by the government / community so they feel inferior.
- The shortage of teachers is due to the very high standard of living in this area and the absence of housing for teachers, so teachers from outside South Sumatra are reluctant to move to teach in Palembang.
As a result, they preferred to go to school on the island of Java, because the cost of living in Java was far less than the cost of living in Palembang. After 1955, there began a bright light in the development of state high schools in this area. This is marked by the construction of a three-story building in a large hill area which at the beginning of 1957 was ready to be occupied, so that since 1957 this school no longer hitchhiked here and there. Palembang State High School was expanded by opening part A and C. High Schools, which later became Part B High Schools 1, while Part A and C High Schools became State High Schools 2, but the two High Schools had one leader, namely B.M. Adnan and his building are still one, namely the SMA Building on Jalan R. Suprapto (Jalan Srijaya Negara now) in a large hill area which is now known as the Palembang 1 High School building. It can be said that SMA Negeri 1 Palembang is the forerunner of all good state high schools in South Sumatra today.
Student
Student council Intra-School Student Organization (OSIS) in SMA Negeri 1 Palembang has run well. For every election of OSIS Chairperson in Palembang 1 High School, it is done by direct election by students of Palembang 1 High School. II. Pedagogical Contents

For our second week in Indonesia, we already had our observation to ma’am Rita’s class and teaching assistance. On Tuesday, ma’am Rita was the first one to teach grade 10 at 8:30 am to 10 am. Her class was Science 1. I observed that the students were participative and good at speaking in English since they are known as one of the Cambridge classes. As I observed ma’am Rita, she asked the prayer leader to lead the prayer. When the prayer was finished, she asked the students nicely, “who is absent today?” and “how are you today?”. Right after that, she called some volunteers to recite what was the last topic all about and it’s like a review but in a form of recitation. The next thing she did was she wrote the topic and learning objectives on the board.

Ma’am Rita played a video clip related to the lesson. It was about the theory of how the earth was formed and the evolution of humankind. She told the students to form questions regarding the video clip they had watched and called some students to share their questions in class. Ma’am Rita explained the important points of the lesson through the use of carton, then she distributed the materials of the lesson and worksheet. The students have their groupings that’s why it was easy for ma’am to give scores for skills assessment. 15-20 minutes was given to the students to answer the worksheet, after that, they were asked to present their work in front. The other groups can raise their questions to the presenting group. Some groups we’re not called to share their work because there was still an individual activity.

Overall, my cooperating teacher (ma’am Rita) used informal assessment for the review of the previous topic, video presentation for her perception, whiteboard for writing the subject matter and learning objectives, carton for the summary of the lesson and handouts for the group and individual activity. They were evaluated through skill assessment rubric for the group activity, and criteria for the essay for individual activity. The class was student-centered since the students did much of the work and the approach was discovery. Ma’am Rita gave the next lesson that the students need to review as their assignment.
